King William’s College has welcomed the first students onto its new blended A-Level programme an impressive 135 days ahead of schedule, marking an exciting new chapter for post-16 education on the Isle of Man.
The innovative programme, delivered in partnership with King’s InterHigh, the UK’s leading online school, began on 21 April 2026, just four months after Principal Damian Henderson first announced plans for a September launch.
The decision to accelerate the launch to the start of the summer term was driven by direct interest from several former students. Their desire to re-engage with the College through this flexible educational model highlights the growing demand for versatile learning programmes that bridge the gap between traditional campus life and digital excellence.
A New Standard for Sixth Form Education
The blended A-Level programme represents a strategic evolution in the College’s curriculum, offering an approach that maintains the academic rigour of King William’s College while exploiting the advanced technical infrastructure of King’s InterHigh.
Principal Damian Henderson noted that the early arrival of these students reflects the efficacy of the blended model in meeting the unique needs of modern learners. By integrating the College’s pastoral support and community environment with a flexible academic delivery, the programme ensures that students on the Isle of Man have access to a truly contemporary Sixth Form experience. “I am very grateful to our new colleagues at King’s InterHigh, and to my wonderful team here at King William’s College, for working together so effectively to expedite the arrival of the blended course”, said Mr Henderson. “As a proud IB World School with a 25-year pedigree in the Diploma Programme, we were a bit nervous about what the take-up would be for blended A-Levels, but any qualms have been blown away by the young people who have seen the opportunities offered by the blended model and jumped straight into it. They have had a wonderful welcome back into our special school community and we look forward to more new joiners this term in Year 12, with even more in September”, he added.
A Tailored Curriculum: Diverse Subject Combinations
The strength of the blended programme lies in its ability to cater to a student’s exact academic profile. By bridging A-Level and IB disciplines, students can curate a portfolio that aligns precisely with their higher education and career aspirations.
Currently, students are engaged in a broad range of A-Level subjects via King’s InterHigh, including:
- Mathematics & Further Mathematics
- Physics & Chemistry
- Business & Geography
- Media Studies & English Language.
Our inaugural cohort has been particularly impressed by the quality of the online teaching provision. As specialists in digital pedagogy, King’s InterHigh utilises the latest technological developments to enhance the learning experience. By employing innovative, IT-driven methods – such as interactive tasks and immersive digital tools – the programme offers a level of engagement that goes far beyond traditional distance learning. Students have also noted the value of receiving prompt and helpful feedback, which has allowed them to make rapid progress.
These A-Level options are being integrated with International Baccalaureate (IB) courses delivered in person at the College, including:
- Sports, Exercise and Health Science
- English Language & Literature
- Visual Arts.
Blended students also have the opportunity to participate in core IB modules:
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK), which fosters the analytical and reflective skills necessary to become more inquisitive and self-aware learners
- The IB Extended Essay: a substantial piece of independent research which allows students to develop advanced information literacy and academic inquiry skills, ensuring they are expertly prepared for the rigours of undergraduate study.
Prioritising Wellbeing: Excellence in Pastoral Care
A central pillar of the blended programme is the seamless integration of online academic flexibility with the exceptional pastoral care for which King William’s College is known. Anya Morgans, Head of Sixth Form and ‘concierge’ for the programme, emphasised that student wellbeing remains at the heart of this new initiative.
“Our inaugural students are already demonstrating the versatility of this model,” she explained. “While some are combining two A-Levels via King’s InterHigh with an in-person International Baccalaureate (IB) subject, others have opted for a full suite of four online A-Levels. Crucially, these students remain fully integrated into our school life, participating in both academic and super-curricular enrichment alongside the IB cohort. To ensure a structured and focused environment, online lessons take place within a dedicated learning hub on campus. Whether it is through our extensive tutorial programme, dedicated community time, games, trips or social events, every student receives the same high standard of pastoral support as their peers. By ensuring they are supported by the same tutors and house systems, we maintain a unified Sixth Form experience where every learner – regardless of their chosen academic route – feels a deep sense of belonging and individual care.”
The blended A-Level programme reflects King William’s College’s wider commitment to offering flexible, future-focused education tailored to individual students. By combining world-class online teaching with the rich co-curricular and pastoral experience of boarding and day school life, the College is creating new opportunities for students on the Isle of Man. We extend a warm welcome to our first cohort of blended learners and look forward to the continued growth of this innovative programme and the unique academic diversity it brings to our Sixth Form as we move toward the new academic year.
Applications for September 2026 entry are open, with growing interest from students seeking greater flexibility, broader subject choice and a more personalised route through Sixth Form.
