The W H Brien Musical Award
Through a very generous bequest, King William’s College is able to offer financial assistance to talented young persons studying Music to join the School in Years 9, 10 or 11 (for GCSE) or in Year 12 (for the IB Diploma Programme).
The W H Brien Musical Award is a combination of Scholarship and means-tested bursary. It will be awarded to candidates who can demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to Music and the successful students will be expected to undertake a Music course at GCSE / IB in addition to contributing to the rich musical life of College.
Applications are currently being accepted for the academic year commencing September 2026.
Scholarship Assessment
Applicants for The W H Brien Musical Award will be invited to take part in a practical assessment. This will include:
- A performance of two pieces on the candidate’s main instrument or voice.
- A performance of an additional piece on the candidate’s second instrument (if applicable).
- Aural tests.
- General musicianship tests.
- A short interview with the Director of Music.
We ask that candidates provide their own accompanist and that the sheet music is supplied to the College in advance of the audition.

Music at KWC
The W H Brien Musical Award is an excellent opportunity for an individual to join King William’s College. With a vibrant and active musical department, excellent academic results and exceptional pastoral care, students are provided with the tools to flourish.
Music thrives at King William’s College and plays a key part in school life. We strive for excellence in all aspects of Music and actively encourage creativity of expression. There is ample opportunity for students to perform both individually and in ensembles with many of our students performing on and off Island. Our aim for music making is to promote a sense of community and team work with a shared goal, ultimately fostering feelings of pride, joy and achievement.
At King William’s College, the Fifth Form is divided into three years: Year 9 (Lower Fifth), Year 10 (Middle Fifth) and Year 11 (Upper Fifth). They are accommodated in the Fifth Form Centre in the very heart of the School and each year group has its own separate area. Each Fifth Former is assigned a tutor and the tutor stays with them for the whole of their time in the Fifth Form. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum in the Fifth Form, and most pupils study a total of 10 or 11 subjects to (I)GCSE level.
